After dabbling with a futuristic story in THE RUT, Scott Phillips returns to noirish territory with a fantastically unseemly novel set in Wichita just after World War Two. Wayne Ogden, who we met in THE WALKAWAY, has just returned from Europe having served in the US Army. He didn’t fight on the front lines but instead was a Quarter Master Sergeant where he learned how to make a healthy profit from the black market, skills he wants to put to use now he has returned home. But home life isn’t suiting Wayne. He’s grown used to be his own boss and is having trouble settling down to married life and old job. As his tries to help his boss avoid a boardroom coup the violence and debauchery escalate and Wayne must decided whether he can adjust to life at home or whether he must seek out something else.
